AFOA have produced financial literacy education programs that are specifically written for Canadian Aboriginal students. There are 3 packages; for elementary school, for middle school and for high school, as well as resources for other generations including those approaching retirement. The school programs come with student booklets that are highly engaging, colourful and relevant for students. A stand out feature for me was the encouragement of entrepreneurial behaviour, with case studies including blueberry jam making and the sale of hand made crafts. Patricia and Simon were very helpful, explaining some of the unique financial education needs that are applicable to First Nation people. In particular, the lodging tax returns to access financial support for youth education is encouraged. Simon is a highly educated and respected academic, and has recently published a review of financial literacy education in relation to Indigenous cultures around the world. He is also an artist of renown, and has pieces in the Canada Museum of Art! Simon and Patricia generously offered to post a hard copy of their materials.
